6 Tips to Save Money on A Dogs Health Care

The cost of dental prophylaxis for your dog has to include general anesthesia, antibiotics, and often an older dog will need extras like pre-surgical blood work and x-rays to determine the extent of her dental disease.

These expenses are totally unnecessary but common because most families do not bother taking care of their dog’s teeth before they develop problems that require surgery.

Avoid all of these costs by a little preventative care each day. A larger dog might be able to do fine with dental chews but a small dog whose teeth are crowded together is more inclined to build up tartar and more in need of tooth brushing.

By taking care of your dog´s oral health, you will also be preventing the expense and heartache of some forms of heart disease (endocarditis is caused by bacteria growing on the heart secondary to dental disease), liver disease, and kidney failure (which can be caused by the kidney attempting to filter the bacteria shed from the diseased mouth).

2. Buy Inexpensive Heartworm Preventative

Heartworm preventative is important but should be one of the cheapest parts of your dog´s health care expenses. Unfortunately the companies that sell dog heartworm preventative markup the cost of the drugs used unreasonably and veterinarians benefit from this program.

You can buy heartworm preventative online with a prescription provided by your veterinarian, online without a prescription (from sources outside the US), or if you have several dogs or large dogs buy ivermectin and prevent heartworm disease economically.

3. Give Your Dog Core Vaccines Only When Needed

Most of the expense of the yearly visit to the veterinary clinic is due to the vaccines your dog is given.

These vaccines do not need to be given yearly. Not only do all the vaccines a dog needs last a lot longer than used to be believed,over-vaccination actually causes many health problems.

Your dog is safe if she is only vaccinated every three years. Distemper and parvovirus vaccines probably last at least seven years so if you decide to delay the vaccines because of the cost (and the risk to your dog´s health) no medical professional can argue with you about this.

Avoid expensive problems by neutering or spaying your dog.

4.Give Dewormer Only If Needed

The most popular brand of heartworm preventative also includes an inexpensive dewormer that is effective against some of the common parasites. Would you take a medication to treat a disease you did not have? Most adult dogs are immune to any symptoms of roundworms and may never need to be treated, but they are still given the drug every month.

A normal dog does not really need to be tested more than once a year so it would be fine to take a stool sample to be checked at the time of her yearly visit. If the sample is negative, there is no need to treat. If it is positive and you only have one dog or a small dog it will not be expensive to purchase the medication at the time of your visit. If you have several dogs you can treat with many inexpensive dewormers available online.
5.Spay Or Neuter Your Dog

Besides avoiding diseases like pyometra (an infection of the uterus), spaying your dog will also prevent her from having puppies. Most people think puppies are a great experience but do not realize how expensive the “wonderful experience” is going to be. A female dog will be susceptible to internal parasites, have other health problems, and need more food; of course you will need to find a home for the puppies when they are about eight weeks old.

When neutering your male dog, one of the main benefits is decreasing his likelihood of roaming. Your male dog may be picked up by the animal shelter and he will need to be “bailed out”, if you are lucky enough to find him before he is euthanized.

If he is not caught by the shelter he may end up in an emergency veterinarian´s office after having been hit by a car. No one is likely to pay for a stray dog and if your dog is not neutered and not wearing tags with your phone number he will likely be euthanized on the spot. If he is lucky enough to avoid the dogcatcher and the highway he will still be out picking up parasites and other infectious diseases.

So get your dog neutered or spayed.

Obamacare Help: Tips For Applying Online To The Healthcare Marketplace

Signing up for the Healthcare Marketplace (where you and the Affordable Healthcare Act/”Obamacare” finally meet) may sound like the chore you want to keep bumping to the bottom of the list.

The abundance of frustrated accounts from would-be signees has only curbed enthusiasm for doing what everyone needs to by March 31, 2014 – registering an account, submitting an application, and selecting an insurance plan for your medical expenses.

If you elect to sign up during this open enrollment period, this piece is the first in a series of how-to’s for utilizing the Healthcare Marketplace (saving you as many surprises as possible) – beginning with the sign up and application process.
Simply put, your steps will include:

Create a Marketplace account (username and password linked to an existing e-mail)
Verify Your Identity
Get Started (on your application)
Family and Household
Additional Information
Review and Sign

Below are details on these steps, as well as a few tips for potential issues you may encounter in the process. Before continuing though, know that there are other ways to apply for and receive coverage.

Three Other Ways to Apply:

Paper Application – fill out your application at home and mail it in. You’ll be made aware of which plans you’re eligible for, as well as benefits like reduced premiums and Medicaid/Child Healthcare Insurance Program (CHIP) eligibility when you receive your eligibility notice in the mail. This allows you to skip straight to the plans you can choose from online.

By Phone – call 1-800-378-2596, 24-hours a day, 7-days a week (1-855-889-4325 for TTY). I called the number myself to try it and ask a few questions. It’s surprisingly accommodating, initially beginning with an automated message, but quickly giving you the option of speaking with a representative.

In Person (Assisted Application) – all states have trained personnel to help you understand your options and enroll. Their names can differ from state to state (navigators, application assisters, certified application officers, Medicaid/CHIP officers).

If you still elect to use the website, registering and applying online should go something like this:

Creating a Marketplace Account:

After going to healthcare.gov, click “apply online”.

Next, you’ll select whether you’re someone seeking a plan for yourself (or family) or an employer shopping for employee healthcare (the page automatically loads for “single person/family” plans).

You’ll need to select your state before continuing.
Select your state with the pull down menu on the left.

If your state has its own website for purchasing healthcare plans, you’ll be notified of this and given the link to that page. You’ll continue from the Marketplace site otherwise.
You should see this after selecting your state.

When creating my account, I encountered my first issue: labels for the fields to enter your new username and other information didn’t display properly. This seemed to only happen on Mac desktops (at the time this was written) – a quick check on a PC and my smartphone and tablet didn’t have the same issue.

Excellent Customer Service in the U.S. Health Care System

The U.S. Health Care System

Health care in the United States has taken a big hit, especially in the past four years. Economical streamlining has created cuts across the nation, but world wide, people feel the negative effects of a crushed economy. There is not one country that has not experienced a blow to their nation’s financial stability. When this occurs, it affects all areas of livelihood, including our health care and its delivery.

As a Registered Nurse, I have observed changes in medical centers, doctor’s offices, and hospitals, where I’ve been employed for the duration of my career. Historically, health care providers focused on the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of the patient, concerned for a person’s total well being. As time passed, the technical aspects of health care became state of the art, and health care as an industry became primarily focused on profit and progress, losing the personal touch. As small hospitals gave way to larger health care systems, and doctor’s offices became medical centers, patient care became time driven-how many patients could be seen in X number of hours. No longer was it acceptable for a doctor to sit and chat about what might really be ailing you.

Excellent Customer Service has Strong Leaders

Now, more than ever before, businesses are realizing that ‘good customer service’ is no longer the goal; competition is steep in all types of industries, health care included; and in order to thrive in today’s economy, one must go above and beyond. Therefore, stellar health care systems hire experts to manage the key points of customer service and present them to the leaders of the corporation. If those in charge of the overall management of a major health care system do not understand the basic points of what makes great customer service, how can their employees expect to get it-or implement an action plan?
The Underlying Principles of Great Customer Service

Here are some key points that have been researched, through direct patient surveys and marketing queries, and implemented for the importance of maintaining and gaining new clients and providing excellent customer service:

1. Strong health care entities have a mission goal of service to their customers, (the patient and their families), their employees, (satisfied employees create a warm working environment in which the patient is received), and the community, (patients live in the community and know many people who may eventually need the health care services).

2. Effective leaders role model the mission statement and standards and assist their subordinates to support these standards by providing what is necessary to create an above average atmosphere of service.

3. A positive health care work environment respects and values each employee, no matter what level of education; from the front desk receptionist, to the housekeepers, cooks, dietary staff, the technicians, Registered Nurses, pharmacists, and physicians. No one person is exempt from the expectation that they are a contributor to the overall satisfaction of the client during their stay in the hospital.

4. Employees are given opportunities to receive adequate training to carry out the mission standards; opportunities to offer feedback regarding their work experiences; and evaluation on whether they are meeting those standards.

5. A strong health care system is confident in inquiring of their clients, (patients), how they can improve and therefore offers a patient satisfaction survey system.

6. A team attitude, and incentive for improving, is supported through positive, strong support of all department managers.

The Success of Great Customer Service in Health Care

It is obvious when a health care system is working within a community because it shows signs of growth. The hospital may get state of the art equipment; they may add wings or new services; new staff is hired; etc. Additionally, the particular health care corporation may be affiliated with a local medical center, which also reflects progress and improvement for services in the community.

How does this growth occur? It happens because of the dynamic flow of energy that is put into that service experience. For example: A patient who visits a doctor and ends up in a hospital for further testing or medical help is not a separate entity. Even if the patient has no other family members in the immediate area, there is bound to be a friend, neighbor, co-worker or church member who will eventually learn about the care the patient received.

In 2008, one survey showed that 50% of new referrals came from patients who had positive care giving experiences. Only one-fourth of the referrals were from physicians in the community. Word of mouth can be the most uplifting tool to increase a health care system’s image as a reputable place to get well…or, it can be its worse enemy, because once the word spreads that tells a tale of bad service, it is very difficult to get that image out of people’s minds. Excellent health care service avoids having to do that to begin with.

How to Improve Customer Service

Here are some important ways to provide excellent customer service in health care:

1. Think of the ‘patient’ as a ‘client’ or customer.

2. On the first encounter: SMILE-a friendly affect goes a long way, especially when emotions tend to run high when there are health issues at stake.

3. Ask your client how she would like to be addressed, and then honor that. When introducing her to other staff let them know of her preference. (On a personal note: whenever I admit a new patient to the unit I observe if they request the use of a nickname and add that to the patient roster, making a point to communicate this information to the oncoming shift).

4. Explain ALL procedures, especially if it is a first time experience.

5. Ask if there are questions-be sure to take the time to answer them and if you do not know the answer, seek the answer or its resource.

6. When dealing with minor patients under the age of 18, talk directly to the child or teen, along with the parents or guardians. This gives an air of respect to the client, as well as ensuring a greater level of participation from the child/teen, in the treatment procedures.

7. Show compassion-this builds trust and a rapport. There is a greater appreciation for understanding and empathy, over task-oriented busyness, which is felt by the client.

8. Be aware of your client’s needs. If he is in the doctor’s office for an extended time period offer a compensation of some sort. The patient will be much more forgiving and it increases the chances for a higher rate of return, along with a positive word of mouth. One way I attempt to be sensitive to a patient’s needs when they have had several hours of waiting in the Emergency room before transferring to our floor, is by checking with the RN who is caring for this person to determine if they were served a meal while they were in that department. I am always surprised at how often this simple, but basic, need is neglected. That allows me to anticipate a need on his arrival to our unit, and preparation to have something on hand.

9. Be friendly, but maintain professionalism. Even if you know the person you are caring for on a personal level, remember that they are there for medical reasons and not social ones.

10. Engage the patient in participating in her treatment; offer choices; carefully listen to what is being said and accommodate, or give thorough reasons and explanations as to why this cannot be met. The more a client/patient actively participates in her treatment, the greater the outcome of satisfaction will be.

11. Provide a safe and comfortable environment of care. Many patients complain of the impersonal, cold treatment that they receive. They are asked personal information; they are often expected to sit in rooms with few cloths or just a paper gown on; they are poked, prodded and palpated, and frequently with cold equipment and little explanation on what to expect. Taking these needs into consideration will improve customer satisfaction.

12. Whenever entering a patient’s room, KNOCK. I can’t begin to tell you how often this simple gesture of politeness and respect is ignored or forgotten.

13. When first meeting a new client: INTRODUCE YOURSELF. Don’t expect the person to take a ‘tell all’ attitude towards the questions you ask while never knowing who the interviewer is! While most physicians have little qualms about doing this, but I have had many experiences as a patient in a new office in which the nurse or medical technician comes in and gets busy taking my vital signs and information, but never introduces herself.

How Technology Changed The Face Of Nursing

No workplace has escaped the touch of technology, including nursing. Nursing is still, and will always be, a field where technology has had a huge impact on the way that nurses do their job. While some of the technological advances have made the nurse’s job easier, others have been implemented as a price saving measure, and still others are used to improve patient safety.

Like those in other industries, nurses are often reluctant of using new technologies. With the desire to remain within the process they are familiar with, nurses are often unwillingly pulled into newer technologies. Like most others, once they become familiar with new technology, they grow to like it. One side effect of the new technological advancements in healthcare is the increase in jobs related to the field. Before ultrasounds, there was no need for someone trained to perform them. Respiratory therapy, nuclear medicine and many other branches of healthcare have created new jobs by the advancement of technology.

Improvements in medical care

Advancements in technology have lead to improved healthcare and patient care. Before the development of electronic IV monitors and IV pump infusions, anyone who received an IV had it administered under the watchful eye of a nurse. Because manual IVs were susceptible to stopping or flowing too rapidly, a nurse remained by the patient’s side every time they received an IV. When you consider how common IVs are, it is easy to see how much time is saved with the electronic IV monitor.

All nurses are familiar with the sphygmomanometer. This is the technical name for a blood pressure cuff. Having an electronic blood pressure cuff that also records the patient’s heart beat is probably one of the greatest time saving tools that technology has brought to nursing.

Technologies such as ultrasound and sonograms have given the medical community the ability to look inside of the human body and see unborn babies and cancerous tumors. While a nurse does not perform or read the ultrasounds and sonograms, their effect has touched the nursing community by allowing more invasive diagnostic procedures to fall by the wayside.

Improvements in information management

As important as nursing care is for the patient, it is only one part of the nurse’s job. The nurse is responsible for maintaining an accurate record on each patient under her care. While many hospitals continue to use pen and paper charting, technology can make the record keeping process less cumbersome. There are computerized programs available for medication dispensing, hospital occupancy and insurance and payment programs. Patient records can be maintained in a computerized database which allows the physician, nurse or other medical professional to pull up the patient’s medical history in seconds. Portable computing equipment allows the nurse to update the information on the fly, rather than at the end of each shift. Internet access allows medical personnel to have instant access to databases to search for symptoms and drug interactions.

Reducing the risk of mistakes

Computerized drug management software reduces the chances of a patient receiving the wrong drug, or being given two drugs that should not be given together. Portable defibrillators only work when they are needed and properly applied. Many of the improvements in technology are aimed at reducing the risk of errors and mistakes that can lead to injury or death. This not only makes the hospital a safer place for patients, but helps ease the stress nurses and other medical professionals are under.

Technology and the nurse

As the nursing field becomes more specialized, the need for nurses that are comfortable with new technology will only increase. While many of the therapies for disease involve drugs, a growing number include medical devices. Technology is focused on the healthcare industry right now for a variety of reasons. Recent drug interactions of approved drugs have made more healthcare development firms look at device development as a safer and less litigious area of development.

The growing needs for medical care and the shortage of healthcare workers also drive the development of new technology. Innovations that make it possible for a nurse to perform duties more efficiently, or allow them to hand over duties to an aide or administrative personnel increases efficiency and increase the number of patients that can be cared for with the same number of nurses.

The desire to reduce mistakes that can cause harm to the patient also drive the development of technology. Devices that have built in safeguards that prevent misuse are one example of this technology. In many highly computerized hospitals, a patient cannot be dispensed the improper medicine, because the computer checks current medications the patient is currently taking, and the patient’s diagnosis, before allowing the medication to be removed from the pharmacy. If the doctor wants the medicine, he must manually override the system.

While nothing can totally remove the pressure of working as a nurse, many innovative solutions have made the job much more manageable. While the learning curve is often steep, the savings in time and worry are your compensation.

Southdowns Residential Estate – Launch of final phase

Southdowns Residential Estate in Centurion has launched the development’s final phase, showcasing 54 new townhouses and 16 new cluster homes, all designed to fit into the country life feel that today has become the hallmark of the estate.
Southdowns Residential Estate – Launch of final phase
Instant sellout

Within days of the initial launch of Southdowns Residential Estate 10 years ago, with some buyers even camping outside overnight, the first 381 land parcels were sold out. Since then a further 120 stands have been developed and sold seeing Southdowns Estate become one of the most sought after country lifestyle estates in South Africa. And for those lucky first buyers, they have an inflation beating investment.

What makes the launch of the final phase all the more exciting is that today Jack Prentice, Developer and Managing Director of Southdowns Management Services, has been able to draw from ‘lessons learned’ during the earlier phases of the development. “Although we had the guidelines, today we know that people don’t really need 20 sq. metre bathrooms but they do need low maintenance homes. We’ve also largely gone to single storey houses as no-one has ever said I won’t look at a single story house but we do get both young and older people who won’t look at a double storey.” Mortimer Harvey has developed and is implementing a digital and public relations campaign to support sales and marketing of the development’s final phase.

Country life with class

“A piece of the past has found its way to the future.” Irene, the name given to a choice piece of Highveld land in 1889, is surrounded by weeping willows, tree lined streets and the meandering Hennops River. Nested in the heart of Irene is the Southdowns Residential Estate, conveniently situated just of the N1 highway, but far enough not to hear the city’s hustle and bustle. The Estate is covered by some 46 hectares of conservation corridors and agricultural areas. The landscaping consist of indigenous planting designed to maximise bio-diversity.
